A Species Unlike Any Other

It is estimated that there are over 500 general varieties of Macramé Owl, with evolutions and mutations occurring all the time. Here are just a few of the varieties in our care. Read more about these individuals on our blog.
These are no ordinary owls… these are Macramé Owls.
Albino Macramé Owl

 

Rosemary is an Albino Macramé Owl.

Physical description

White with orange or red eyes.

Personality and disposition

While they adore sunshine, they are extremely sensitive to light and thrive better out of direct sunlight.

Brush-tailed Basketcase Macramé Owl

 

Rita is a Brush-tailed Basketcase Macramé Owl.

Physical description

As the name would suggest, has a tail with the appearance of (or can be used as) a brush. Its stout body is indicative of mixed breeding (possibly with a Pot Bellied variety). One was spotted near a plant pot this summer.

Personality and disposition

Largely unknown. Thought to be rather shy, quiet and retreating, but has occasional bouts of wild and unpredictable behaviour.

Classicus Macramé Owl

Physical description

Basic features, similar to the Typicus variety, but with some additional distinctive features.

Sherman is a Typicus Macramé Owl.

Physical description

Basic features, single colour, plain eyes. Found the world over. Thought to be the original variety from which all varieties have evolved. One of our sanctuary’s best success stories is our very own Typicus variety, Sherman.

Down to earth, modest, hard working, altruistic, loyal.

Elegansh Macramé Owl

 

Lawrence and Lavinia are Elegansh Macramé Owls.

Physical description

One of the prettiest, most distinguished and rare varieties of Macramé Owl, it sports soft, full plumage and a bushy tail. It is quite sizeable and averages 450cm from head to tail. We currently have two Elegansh macramé owl at our sanctuary, Lawrence and Lavinia. Our fingers are crossed for a romance to develop between these two!

Personality and disposition

Quiet, cultured, well-mannered and polite.

Skippy is a Macaw Macramé Owl.

Physical description

The Macaw Macramé Owl has a long body with several bright colours. Of southern hemisphere origin. We currently have one Macaw Macramé Owl at our sanctuary, named Skippy. If you follow Skippy’s sad story and progress on our blog, you will discover that unfortunately his plumage is not quite as brilliant as it should be for such a Macramé Owl in a healthy state.

Quirky, expressive, active and mischievous.

Gentle, basic needs. Happy to mind your own business.

Solid colour, dull expression, with a round, full body.

Fun-loving party-goer, but can be at times overindulgent, with a tendency toward addictive behaviour.

Under 15cm head to tail, with golden flecks.

Personality and disposition

Flamboyant, creative. Don’t be fooled by the tiny stature. This variety has ‘attitude’.

Nervous, anxious, yet thrives on fear. A bit like an adrenaline junkie.

Alfonso and Madeleine are Whimsical Macramé Owls.

Unusual and comical looking, sometimes has unnatural colouring. Identified by the telltale head tassels.

Personality and disposition

The Whimsical Macramé Owl has been rumoured to possess healing powers through the medium of laughter. Its charming sense of humour is said to enliven hearts and perpetuate speedy recovery in humans.
